Two sides to this service. First, on-site chipping during a tree job, the chipper sits on the verge or in the driveway, branches up to about 200mm go straight in, and chips come out into the back of the truck or onto a tarp on your lawn. That's how we leave a Newcastle job tidy without a single trailer load going to the tip. Faster, cheaper, and you get the mulch if you want it.

Second, bulk mulch delivery for landscaping and garden work. Fresh hardwood chip straight off recent jobs holds moisture well and breaks down slowly (best for paths, around established trees, and weed-suppression layers on a new bed. Aged mulch has sat in the windrow for six months or more and is closer to compost) better for new plantings and feeding tired Hunter soils. Coloured mulches (red, black, mocha) are dyed pine chip, mostly for front-yard landscaping where the look matters.

Volume math for Newcastle gardens: at 75mm depth, one cubic metre covers about thirteen square metres. At 100mm depth (what we'd recommend for actual weed suppression in our climate) it's around ten square metres per cube. Tipper drops at the kerb by default; spreading service is on the quote if you don't want to wheelbarrow it yourself.

What's included

  • On-site chipping during any tree-work job, up to 200mm material
  • Chips left as mulch, spread, or hauled off, your call
  • Bulk hardwood chip by the cubic metre, fresh or aged
  • Coloured mulch (red, black, mocha) for front-yard landscaping
  • Tipper delivery direct to a Newcastle address, kerb drop by default
  • Spreading service quoted on top if you want it done for you
  • Split loads (half a cube of one type, half of another) within reason

When you might need this

  • A DIY prune has left a pile of branches and the tip run is going to be six trailer loads
  • A landscaper has spec'd mulch by the cube and you need it delivered
  • Garden beds in Newcastle are going into summer and need water-holding cover
  • New plantings are going in and the soil needs feeding while it settles
  • A path or driveway edge needs weed suppression without herbicide
  • A commercial frontage needs coloured mulch to lift the look

Mulching & Wood Chipping FAQs

What size branches will the chipper take?

About 200mm at the throat on our standard chipper. Forked or knotty pieces a bit under that. Anything bigger we cut into chunks and either chip the smaller wood or stack the rounds for firewood. If the pile is mostly trunk wood over 200mm, we'll talk through the best option before turning up, it's a different machine.

Fresh chip or aged mulch for the garden bed?

Aged mulch. Fresh chip is fine on paths and around established trees, but on a fresh garden bed it locks up nitrogen as it breaks down, and your new plants go yellow waiting for the chip to finish composting. Aged mulch has done that work already and feeds the soil instead of competing with it.

Do you deliver to acreage out toward the Hunter Valley?

Yes. Tipper runs out as far as the Hunter Valley wine country if the volume justifies a full load, typically eight cubes and up. Smaller loads stay closer to Newcastle. Delivery fee scales with distance and is quoted on the cubic-metre price.

How deep should I spread the mulch?

75 to 100mm in our climate. Below 50mm and the weeds push through; above 150mm and you're wasting mulch and starving the soil of air. Pull the layer back from the trunk of any plant by a few centimetres, bark sitting against a wet mulch collar will rot.
